I’ve made several million dollars, but how did I make my first million? Long story short, I got started at the right place and time.* I got into trading in 1998, when the stock market was booming. I made money going long. In 2000, I learned to short sell and profited from the crashing bear market. There's no right answer as to whether going long or short is better. Everyone's different — you have to find what works for you. You have to work HARD. You have to learn to adapt to the market. The best traders I know can go long and short. I prefer going long these days because I think there are a lot of shorts. A lot of newbies are shorting, and the short squeezes are getting crazy. During this time I used two patterns that I repeated. One I recognized was these companies would spike up on day two after their first big green day. I spotted these companies because they were percent gainers. This is the same research process that I use today — 20 years later. That’s why we designed the StocksToTrade software around this key indicator. I was basically buying these boiler room stocks without knowing what they were. I would ride the wave up. Another favorite pattern of mine was when companies added dot-com to their name. They would sometimes spike for three to five days as people started to get excited about this new online world. I would buy dot-com companies that kept spiking, and I’d take my gains along the way.** These are two very simple strategies that I repeated again and again. Very rarely would I lose, and over time my small profits added up to roughly a million dollars in just a few years. I entered the market at the right place and time. It didn’t happen overnight. It happened over time with hard work, dedication, and learning to manage my risk. Remember, investing and trading is always a risky business. I came into the market at the right time, but no matter what or when you trade, you need to learn to manage your risk. What can you learn from my experience? What patterns do you like to trade?
