Electric cars you plug into the wall like a cellphone! So who came up with the idea, and how does the technology really work? Many countries began producing electric three-wheeled cars until the US made a huge breakthrough. In 1891, they created the first electric vehicle, and get this: it was a 6-passenger wagon that could go up to 14 miles per hour. After that, people were thrilled, and the electric car market thrived. In the late 1890s, electric-powered taxis filled the streets of London. SUMMARY
– Cars They needed too many batteries to run the motor over long distances at such low speeds. It wasn’t until 1859 when French physicist Gaston Plante invented the lead acid battery that changed the electric engine game for good. – By the late 1920s, infrastructure in the US had improved significantly, and vehicles needed to go further more efficiently. So, fossil-fuel cars took the lead because they got the job done. – Electric cars took their final hit in 1910 when Henry Ford began his mass production of gas-powered vehicles, which made them ridiculously cheap whereas electric cars cost a lot more. – The main difference between electric and fossil-fueled cars is that the former can use a variety of renewable sources to generate their electricity. In fact, the science behind the electric car is surprisingly simple.
– What about electric cars specifically? Well, most of them convert the direct current electricity from the batteries into an alternating current. – Now, electric cars don’t have a gearbox or lever, and all of them are automatic. They have a single speed transmission that sends power from the induction motor to the wheels. – An electric car gets “juiced up” by being plugged into an outlet or a charging station, and they use three main levels of charging. The first level is the basic charging you can do at home – it uses an outlet of 120 Volts and adds 2-5 miles of charging per hour. – Electric cars are less expensive to run and maintain if we compare them to fuel-powered vehicles, but there’s no denying that the car itself comes with a much higher price tag. But still, according to a recent study, the average operating cost of an electric car is $485 a year, whereas a fossil-fuel automobile is $1,117.

– December 2, 1911. An expedition ship called SY Aurora began its voyage to Antarctica. On board were 31 men led by Douglas Mawson, a 29-year-old explorer, already renowned for his previous expeditions.

– Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, a huge liner with 4 engines – one of the first airplanes with a pressurized cabin and double-deck feature! With this double-deck, it could take up to 100 passengers on board. But on this day, October 16, 1956, there were only 24 passengers and 7 members of the aircrew on the plane. – The Pan Am Flight 6 was supposed to be an around-the-world flight with several stops along the way. This was its last take-off from Honolulu before arriving at the destination point in San Francisco. Unfortunately, at the half-way point, when the plane was climbing in altitude, one of the Boeing’s engines violated its speed limit and stopped. Slowly but surely, the plane started to get closer to the sea, unable to keep the altitude. It didn’t help that another engine, engine number 4, also started to malfunction. But still, pilots managed to distribute the workload to the three remaining engines and keep an altitude of 5,000 ft. – In the summer of 1963. The Tupolev Tu-124 airplane with 52 people on board was circling around in the skies above Saint Petersburg, Russia, trying to find a way to ditch on the Neva River. Problems with this flight began immediately after the plane took off in Tallinn. The front gear of the plane wasn’t able to retract, but the Tupolev couldn’t turn back to Tallinn – the weather was too foggy for that. As the flight was supposed to end in Moscow, the closest place to land safely along the way was in Saint Petersburg. – And, the record holder for the number of people on board a ditching plane – Airbus A320 of US Airways, Flight 1549. Also known as the “Miracle of the Hudson” Flight. It happened 10 years ago, on January 15. The cause of this would-be catastrophic event was nothing more than a flock of geese which struck the engines. – There were two other members on this little team: freelance cameraman Michael Benson and freelance film technician Christopher Duddy. The crew's helicopter was the Bell 206B-III. Equipped with 2 cameras, the helicopter was supposed to do filming runs of the Kilauea Volcano on the Hawaiian Islands. – Everything went as planned until the helicopter started its third pass over the volcano. Just a couple of seconds before the crew reached the center of the crater, disaster struck.
– It happened lightning-fast. In his attempts to save the day, Hosking accidentally got into a cloud of volcanic steam and smoke. The pilot tried to leave it by auto-rotating the helicopter down to the bottom of the crater. – The problem was that they’d decided to continue their climb, and when the helicopter arrived, they were stuck on a high ridge, about 80 ft away from the rim. Obscured by the cloud of dense gases, they had to be left behind. – Twenty-seven hours after the crash, at 2:30 PM, Duddy reached the rim of the crater! He was immediately taken to the hospital but was released one day later.
– Finally, at 9 AM on Monday, during a tiny break in the weather, helicopter pilot Tom Hauptman noticed Benson before the fog closed back up almost immediately.
– The cause of the accident could’ve been the volcanic gas, which caused a partial loss of engine power. Only thanks to the pilot's skills, the filming crew members got away alive and with no serious injuries. – There were two other members on this little team: freelance cameraman Michael Benson and freelance film technician Christopher Duddy. The crew's helicopter was the Bell 206B-III. Equipped with 2 cameras, the helicopter was supposed to do filming runs of the Kilauea Volcano on the Hawaiian Islands. – Everything went as planned until the helicopter started its third pass over the volcano. Just a couple of seconds before the crew reached the center of the crater, disaster struck.
– It happened lightning-fast. In his attempts to save the day, Hosking accidentally got into a cloud of volcanic steam and smoke. The pilot tried to leave it by auto-rotating the helicopter down to the bottom of the crater. – The problem was that they’d decided to continue their climb, and when the helicopter arrived, they were stuck on a high ridge, about 80 ft away from the rim. Obscured by the cloud of dense gases, they had to be left behind. – Twenty-seven hours after the crash, at 2:30 PM, Duddy reached the rim of the crater! He was immediately taken to the hospital but was released one day later.
– Finally, at 9 AM on Monday, during a tiny break in the weather, helicopter pilot Tom Hauptman noticed Benson before the fog closed back up almost immediately.
– The cause of the accident could’ve been the volcanic gas, which caused a partial loss of engine power. Only thanks to the pilot's skills, the filming crew members got away alive and with no serious injuries.
