February 29th, 1932. Four German aviators took off on a trip around the world. They wanted to find companies and markets for the aviation industry, and build up profitable business relationships. The team of aviators used a small plane that could take off and land on both land and water. The men expected their journey to be full of interesting adventures, but none of them imagined that it would become a real nightmare. The team consisted of pilot Hans Bertram, his co-pilot Thom, mechanic Adolph Klausmann, and cameraman Alexander von Lagorio, who filmed their journey and planned to make a movie afterwards. The first 10 weeks of the trip were very successful. The last stop where all 4 team members were still together was Jakarta. At this point, they agreed to separate and meet again in Shanghai. Pilot Bertram and mechanic Klausmann were left alone on the plane. They flew to Australia. They planned to travel 520 miles in 6 hours. What is the world's most venomous animal? Imagine you’re out in the garden on a lovely summer day when you spot a yellow fluffy caterpillar crawling on a leaf. You look closer and notice it has 5 black tufts of longer hair sticking out. You think, “how cute!” and reach out to pet the fuzzy little guy. But hold it right there! That’s an American Dagger, and it’s anything but harmless! Those seemingly soft pleasant hairs are more like stingers! When they get embedded in your skin, it causes a painful rash and welts. But scarier than that is a Puss Caterpillar. You’ll know immediately when this one gets its fluffy hairs in you: it feels worse than a bee sting! Then comes the rash, swelling, fever, and even muscle cramps and joint pain! It’s the most poisonous caterpillar in the US. Young ones are yellow and they get browner and hairier as they grow. Can you believe that a snail can be full of enough venom for 20 adults or that touching an octopus poses a serious danger to any living thing it meets? It was a cold winter morning of January 28, 1885. Fierce winds, blizzard, and freezing temperatures discouraged anyone from wandering outside at Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Head lightkeeper Marcus Hanna was cocooned in a blanket in the safety of the light station known as Two Lights. Sick with a severe cold, he was sleeping after a difficult night shift. The man was unaware of a tragedy that was unfolding not far from his home. The schooner Australia departed from Boothbay, Maine, at 5 PM on January 27. The ship was heading for Boston, and there were three people on board: the captain and two crew members. At first, the journey was uneventful. But not long after the schooner had left the port, the weather started to worsen. By midnight, a severe storm was pounding southern Maine. In no time, the temperatures dropped below zero. To avoid the worst outcome, the captain decided to seek shelter in Portland Harbor.
