She Floated in a Nightgown for 8 Hours and Couldn’t Survive Much Longer

Most people know the sad story of the Titanic. But the Atlantic had other sunken ships. Have you ever heard of the SS Morro Castle? She was an ocean liner completed in the 1930s. On September 5th, 1934, the ship embarked on its final trip, with more than 500 people on board. In the afternoon of September 6th, the liner came across strong winds and thick clouds. The next morning, the clouds became thicker, and the wind shifted to the east. This was the first sign of a developing storm. That day, the captain of the ship, Robert Willmott, had his dinner delivered to him. He soon complained that his stomach hurt. Later, he was found unconscious without a pulse. Chief Officer William Warms took over. At this point, the winds were traveling at 30 miles per hour. But things were about to get worse… Here's the story of Morro Castle shipwrecked on the Jersey shore, and some of the survivors. #brightside Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

The World’s Biggest Skyscrapers (Some Will Even Reach Space!)

Dubai is literally climbing to new heights – the largest and most populous town in the Emirates has Burj Khalifa which is the tallest building in the world. If you laid all its pieces end to end, they’d get a quarter the way around the world. It’s 3 times the height of the Eiffel Tower. The current tallest building in the world, but it could be dethroned soon! And now Dubai decided to break their own record, building an observation tower. It’ll be so tall that if you could lay it on its side, it’d take you 36 minutes to walk its height! Elevators (even super-fast ones) won’t be enough – a vertical bullet train will take their place! It’ll be made up of 6 outer buildings connected to and twisting around a central core. Let's look at it and some other cool skyscrapers. So, the world’s tallest buildings: past, present, and possibly future. #brightside EPISODES:

Why Phone Screens Are Still Made From Glass And Not Plastic

Nowadays, most smartphones are covered in glass to make them look nice. But this design choice has a drawback: even the smallest bump can cause the surface of your phone to shatter. But why are phone screens made of glass, and not something harder to crack like plastic? Plastic is more resilient than glass when dropped. And you could actually buy smartphones with plastic screens for a much lower price. Maybe this is gonna happen in the future? Speaking of the future, phone manufacturers are always looking for new ways to make our gadgets more durable and smarter. And sometimes when they start thinking about what the smartphones of the future will look like, they end up with some interesting ideas. There’s a chance that smartphones might one day completely replace our banks and credit cards. And smartphones will probably play a more important role as ‘authenticator’ systems! #brightside EPISODES:

Your Body Is Basically A Smartphone, Here’s Why

Have you ever given it a thought that the human body and your smartphone may have a lot in common? See for yourself! Both your eye and your phone's camera have lenses and surfaces sensitive to light. The cerebral cortex is the most developed part of your brain. But no worries – your smartphone has a processor to do the same things. Without energy, you won't be able to function – and neither will your gadget! You get energy from everything you eat. When your smartphone is plugged in, it gets its own "food" – electricity. And hey, did you know people have an inbuilt navigation system? You can thank a part of your brain called the entorhinal cortex for your sense of direction. "Grid cells" are your brain's GPS system – they tell you where you are relative to the place where you started. Your smartphone's GPS uses radio waves between satellites and a receiver inside your gadget to get the data necessary to find out where you are and what time it is! #brightside EPISODES:

Please Stop Charging Your Phone at Airport, Here’s Why

Have you ever been stuck at an airport? You’ve checked all your social networks and texted all your friends. Then you see that scary message – “10% charge left”. You find the closest charging station and plug in your phone. And just like that, you’re the victim of a cyberattack. So you should never use airport USB charging stations. This is known as “juice jacking”, and it’s a real risk in public places. Charging stations in shopping centers, airports, hotels, and food courts, or even on public transport can hide things that put your data security at risk. The hackers install a special program on a public charging station. Anyone who connects their device will get that suspicious software installed straight on to their phones. So how does it work? #brightside EPISODES:
